Thing 16: LibraryThing: Where Books Meet Web 2.0

LibraryThing would be a great way to help students find a book that fits their interests. The social aspects of the site would allow students to see what their friends are reading. If they are reading the same books, they could possibly discuss what they've read (Gasp!). It could also be a way to appeal to student's competitive nature by racing to see who reads 20 (or any set number) books the fastest. Each class could set a goal and then tally up the number of books students have kept up with on LibraryThing to determine their totals.

I've used a similar site, goodreads, previously. I would find a book review, particularly one that students might not agree with, and have students respond to what has been written. One can also find a well-written review for a popular book to serve as an example and have students write their own based on the model. My students had a difficult time seeing a review/critique as more than a summary, but such an assignment necessitates higher-level thinking.

  1. I use Goodreads as my own motivator. It is like the adult version of LibraryThing. Right now several of us are participating in the "Book-a-Day" summer challenge. I am also in the "Books I Should Have Read in High School, But Didn't." (Just don't tell about that one to my students)
