Thing 8: What in the World is a Wiki?

I'm still letting the idea of a Wiki marinate in my mind. I enjoyed reading the article and exploring other Wikis used in education. This past year, I used Google sites in our instruction, so I read the information comparing and contrasting the two. I can see how a Wiki is a simple webpage; however, I found it difficult to navigate through the information. The most significant advantage of the Wiki is it's collaborative nature. It was exciting to read about how Vicki Davis's students were enthusiastic about their Wiki projects and extended the idea to create a 10th grade study hall where students could compile information that would help classmates prepare for exams and projects.

The Kubler Reading page was a technological product that went along with literature circles for Tuck Everlasting. The reading roles and assignments were similar to ones that my student's completed for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

I loved the Thousands Project! This was a 5th grade class that posed a monthly question hoping to receive at least a 1000 responses from their global audience. This made me think of Thing 7 where we talked about the momentum that comments provide. What 5th grader, or anyone for that matter, wouldn't be excited to receive over 1000 pieces of feedback from around the world?! Talk about a learning experience beyond the classroom!

I'm still not sure that I will implement a Wiki this school year, but I did get many great ideas that I might apply to our Google sites for next year. That's what resources are all about: taking what is useful and applying it where you can use it.
