Thing 20: Google Docs

I got a lot of exposure to Google Docs last year as the result of a technological emphasis in the middle school AT Language Arts curriculum. All of my AT students were to create Google sites, and I adapted the sites to meet the needs of my Gen Ed and Inclusion students as well. I LOVED having a (semi) paperless classroom and different points during the year. Technology is a great differentiation technique. Students who are more proficient with technology can create more intricate products. It also allows students to excercise more choice in the product they produce.

Feel free to check out my sites:
LangstonEnglish
-online unit for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, where I borrowed extensively from Carrie Breedlove's pilot Google Site
-students collaborated to create research presentations in their Social Studies and English class

LangstonAT
-students kept blogs to record their findings as we read The Red Badge of Courage

The great thing about students collaborating on a document or presentation is the accountability. Teachers can go in and check the revision history to see is one student did all the work or if a group member did not participate. I let my students know that from the start, and it helps keep all members accountable.
