After reading an article about how Twitter can actually improve a student's grammar, I became interested in it's use in classroom instruction. The article stated that because of the 140-character cap, students must reevaluate word choice, vocabulary and sentence structure. Users are also less likely to "texting language".
I can see how a "classroom discussion" could be taken online utilizing Twitter, coaxing students to read a plethora of information added by their peers. Smart phones can also access twitter. Students could answer a teacher-prompted question, respond to a classmate, or post a reflection as a simple homework assignment.
Students would enjoy getting to follow some of the world's top athletes and celebrities. Teachers could also guide them to follow users who provide current news information, literary quotes or interesting facts.
